9-22-06 JACKSON COUNTY F2 TORNADO INCIDENT SUMMARY

Sunday, September 24, 2006, 19:00

At this time initial residential damage assessments have been

completed. There is the possibility that some residences have not been identified as "damaged" due to the lack of owner/occupant reporting or requests for assistance. Damage assessment reporting is only for residences and does not include external structures such as detached garages, sheds, barns, carports, grain silos and vehicles.

19 residences were involved in the incident in the following FEMA/IEMA damage assessment categories:

  • AFFECTED (if the living unit was damaged but still habitable) - 11
  • MINOR (if the home is damaged and uninhabitable, but may be made
habitable in a short period of time) - 2
  • MAJOR (if the home has sustained structural or significant damages, is uninhabitable, and requires extensive repairs) - 3
  • DESTROYED (if the home is a total loss or damaged to such an extent that repairs are not economically feasible) – 3

Kelly Hooper from the National Weather Service in Paducah, Kentucky determined that the tornado entered Jackson County as an F2. The width of the vortex on the ground was 125 yards, peak wind velocities were 150 miles per hour and traveled approximately 19.5 miles. The tornado had decreased to an F0 upon reaching Lake Kincaid Marina, but continued Northeast of Murphysboro causing notable damage. Scattered debris has been reported throughout Jackson County, with reports as far away as Franklin County.
