Chief County Assessment Office

Maureen Berkowitz, Certified Illinois Assessing Officer, has been engaged in real estate valuation since 1990 and has served as Jackson County Supervisor of Assessments since she was appointed in 2002 and then elected in 2010.

 

As the Chief County Assessment Officer, she is responsible for coordinating the countywide assessment process, equalizing assessments among the county’s 16 townships, providing statistical performance data to the Illinois Department of Revenue, applying various tax exemptions, and maintaining the county’s Geographical Information System.  Berkowitz also serves as the Clerk of the Board of Review, chairs the County Farmland Assessment Review committee, administers the county’s subdivision ordinance, and is the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) officer for that department.

 

Berkowitz was appointed to the Jackson County Board of Review in 1999,  serving until her appointment to Supervisor of Assessments.  She was one of the top-selling real estate agents in Carbondale from 1992-2002.  She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of Liberal Arts at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in 1980.

 

Berkowitz sits on the Board of Directors for the County Assessment Officers Association.  She is also on the Board of Directors for the League of Women Voters of Jackson County and the Bittersweet Homeowners Association and serves as secretary to both.
